Coursework
My specialized coursework in information science at Texas includes the following:
Rare Books and Special Collections
Studies in the Book Arts
Drawing on my knowledge of Spanish, my interest in colonial history, and the collections of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, I produced an exhibition catalog of women printers in colonial Mexico (pdf) as my final project in this course.
Rare Books and Special Collections
This course, taught at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, included an assignment on descriptive bibliography (pdf), for which I examined a sixteenth-century Petrarch. For my final project, I performed a content analysis of job advertisements for special collections librarians and wrote a paper on the relationships between the data I collected and the 2008 competencies document approved by RBMS and ACRL. I'm currently revising this paper to submit it for publication.
Archival Enterprise
Introduction to Archival Enterprise I
As part of this course, two colleagues and I arranged and described the Jack Leven Stotts Papers (pdf) at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Archives.
Introduction to Archival Enterprise II
For my final paper in this course, I examined the relationships among special collections libraries, archives, and museums (pdf) , and examined the ways that archives could collaborate with these types of institutions.
Museum Archives
This course, offered through the WISE program, examined recordkeeping and information systems in the museum environment. I found it a useful and interesting counterpart to my previous training in museum studies.
Museum Studies
My previous master's degree in art history included seminars and an internship in museum studies, and several of the courses also included considerations of the roles and functions of the museum in the arts and everyday life.
Other Coursework
In addition to my areas of specialization, I've taken courses in organizing information, user services, management, research methods, the history of the Internet, and descriptive cataloging and metadata.
